PRESSURE IS POWERFUL

Ceri’s story is unorthodox.

Even now, people struggle to understand the term ‘Performance Psychiatrist’ – isn’t that a contradiction in terms?

Ceri has seen – and done – it otherwise, preferring to live in the rich intersection between the clinical and performance worlds to help people perform under pressure.

We all hear about practitioners who promise to ‘unlock your potential’. Ceri goes further by showing that the lock involves a specific mental mechanism. He also shows you how to turn the key.

In the same way that patients struggle to function because of symptoms, elite performers nearly all, at some point, get in their own way and fall short because of mental blocks.

For those that prefer an edgy approach, what better, then, than an experienced forensic psychiatrist and clinical director – used to delving deep inside the minds of violent offenders and traversing the complex, hard-edged Court, Prison and secure psychiatric hospital systems – to cut through to your core issues and frame up how to unblock mental performance?

Ceri’s hands-on sporting experience in sporting environments includes extended periods with the Mercedes Formula 1 team, Arsenal FC, the Brooklyn Nets NBA team, and, since 2010, with the New Zealand All Blacks – now as Head of Leadership and Mental Performance – as well as Olympic medalists.

As ‘The Pressure Doctor’, Ceri also has been invited to assist across the spectrum, from worlds as diverse as finance, heavy industry, special forces, first responders, government, politics, law, medicine and the performing arts.

Ceri has found chemistry in the place the clinical and performance worlds intersect.

His earlier path showed the signs. He graduated in Medicine with Distinction from Otago Medical School while often being away on tour with the New Zealand Football Team. He completed a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University in Psychology while playing professional football in the English Championship. He was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the same year he was awarded his football coaching ‘A’ License.

Not one to be put off by old-school resistance to psychological input, Ceri created his own path.

As detailed in his debut work, Perform Under Pressure, his highly popular Red-Blue Mind Model is used by people committed to excelling in demanding situations, from doctors to lawyers, executive teams to specialist teams, and from professionals to amateurs.

Now in private practice, if you or your team (1) face pressure and (2) genuinely want to get better at what you do, Ceri offers a different solution.

Working with Ceri has helped us shape our ethos, strengthen the resilience of our internal culture and unlock greater performance from the team.
